Introducing Personas

1. What are Personas?

   Personas are easy-to-install, easy-to-use themes that change the look of your Firefox web browser. There are thousands of Personas to choose from, with more added every day.

2. What is Personas Plus and how do I get it?

   Personas Plus is a free Firefox add-on that gives you one-click access to the full Personas experience. Here are some of the things you can do with Personas Plus:

   1. Enjoy instant access to over 35,000 designs
   2. Choose your favorites and switch Personas anytime
   3. Create your own design for your computer
   4. Access the hottest new designs and features as they arrive

   To get Personas Plus, go here and click the green Get Personas Plus button. Once Personas are installed, you'll be able to choose and change your persona any time simply by clicking on the little fox mask in the lower left corner of your browser window or by visiting the gallery and selecting a different design.

3. What kind of computer and operating system does Personas work with?

   Personas work with any type of computer that has Firefox installed. This includes Mac, Linux and Windows platforms. (You must have administrative rights to add Personas to your Firefox browser.)

4. What's the difference between a Firefox theme and Personas for Firefox?

   Themes change the appearance of Firefox. A Persona is a special type of theme that changes the look of your browser without changing the navigation buttons, toolbars, and menus. Until now, to apply a theme you needed to install it and restart your browser, like with extensions and other add-ons.

   Now, with Personas you can instantly preview a design and install it in one click without needing to restart. All original themes are still available through addons.mozilla.org. Click here to learn more about using Themes and Personas.

5. Is Personas for Firefox open source?

   Yes. The source code for Personas is available under the MPL/GPL/LGPL tri-license. You can view the source here.

Using Personas

1. How do I change my current Persona?

   With Firefox 3.6, there are two easy ways to change your Persona:

   1. Visit the Personas gallery, choose your favorite design, and click on your choice to instantly change the look of your browser.
      Or
   2. Go to the Tools menu in Firefox and select Add-ons to display the add-ons manager. Then click on the Themes button at the top of the add-ons manager window to list your most recently selected designs, or click Find More to see even more designs.

   If you have Personas Plus, click on the little fox mask in the lower left corner of your browser so you can easily select a Persona that suits your style.

   There are two easy ways to change your Persona:

   1. Visit the gallery, choose your favorite Persona, and click on your choice to instantly change the look of your browser.
      OR
   2. Click on the little fox mask in the lower left hand corner of your browser, then select a Persona that suits your style.

2. If I have an existing Firefox theme installed, what will happen when I apply a Persona design?

   If you have a non-default theme installed, Firefox will automatically switch to a default theme in order to allow you to use your choice of persona designs.

3. If I have an existing Firefox theme installed, will Personas still work?

   Yes. If you are using Firefox 3.6 and have a non-default theme installed, Firefox will automatically switch to a default theme in order to allow you to use your choice of persona designs.

   If you are using an earlier version of Firefox, it's strongly recommended that you uninstall a theme when using Personas. To disable a current Firefox theme, go to the Tools menu and select Add-ons to display the add-ons manager. Then click on the Themes button at the top of the add-ons manager window, click on the Default theme for Firefox, and click on Use Theme. After a quick restart, you'll be ready to dress up your browser with Personas.

4. How do I undo a Persona design?

   To undo the design you most recently selected, click on the little fox in the bottom left corner of your browser, click on Recently Selected and the design you were using before. If you prefer not to have a Persona design (ie, grey chrome), click on the little fox and select Default.

   To disable a current Persona design, go to the Tools menu and select Add-ons to display the add-ons manager. Then click on the Themes button at the top of the add-ons manager window, click on the Default theme for Firefox, and click on Use Theme.

5. How do I uninstall Personas for Firefox?

   If you've decided Personas doesn't work for you, you can uninstall with a few easy steps:

   1. Open the Add-ons dialog box by going to "Tools->Add-ons"
   2. Click on the "Extensions" button on the top
   3. Select "Personas"
   4. Click "Uninstall"
   5. Restart Firefox

6. How do I provide feedback?

2. Are there any guidelines for content allowed in the Personas gallery?

   Yes. We are big fans of creativity, but want to ensure that the art displayed in the Personas gallery meets a basic set of guidelines. Please review the Terms of Service here for authoritative and complete language, but the following gives you an overview of the requirements:

   1. You either own all the elements of your design OR you are authorized worldwide to reproduce and distribute them (and allow others to do so) by the owner or the law.
   2. Your design does not contain provocative, offensive, or sexual content (i.e., it is G or PG-rated).
   3. Your design does not include identifiable elements of any non-celebrity person(s) other than yourself or individuals who have given you permission to do so.
   4. Your design does not depict violence or Nazi imagery, nor is it discriminatory or hateful.
   5. Your design does not relate to gambling.
   6. Your design does not violate any applicable law or regulation or the rights of any person or entity.

   Also, note that your design needs to be suitable for the Personas format (see guidelines), of usable quality, and not duplicative of a prior submission. Finally, while Mozilla does provide guidelines for submissions, Mozilla retains the discretion to reject or remove designs for any reason. In some cases, this is necessary for legal reasons, but it also allows us to maintain the integrity of the site.

3. Do I still retain ownership over Persona artwork that I upload to the Personas website?

   Yes. Your artwork will always be your artwork.

4. Do I have to add my Persona to the public gallery?

   No. If you have Personas Plus installed, you can create a custom Persona for your use only by following these steps:

   First, enable custom Personas in your version of Personas by doing the following:

   1. Click on the little fox mask icon in the lower left corner of your browser and select Preferences
   2. Under Advanced, select Show Custom Persona Menu
   3. Close the preferences window

   Then, create your custom Persona by doing the following:

   1. Click on the little fox mask icon in the lower left corner of your browser
   2. Select Custom Persona, then select Edit from its sub-menu
   3. Specify a header, footer, text color and accent color for a Persona that's locally stored on your computer

   Your new Persona will be automatically selected, or you can choose it from the little fox mask menu.

5. After creating a Persona, can I edit or delete the design?

   Yes. If at any point you need to edit or delete your Persona design after it has been submitted to the gallery, go here or go to the gallery and click on My Designs. From there, you can view your current designs. By clicking on each, you can make changes to each design's settings.

6. What's the maximum file size allowable for my persona?

   The persona that you upload may not exceed 300KB for the header or the footer image.
